Fanatics is preparing to debut in Ontario after obtaining an iGaming operator license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, known as AGCO.
This endorsement allows the online sports platform to access Canada’s top online gambling sector, which is already home to 48 licensed operators and 83 functioning websites.
A spokesperson from Fanatics informed Casino.org that more information regarding the launch will be released in the upcoming weeks. Currently, the Fanatics Sportsbook is operational online in 23 states across the U. S. and Washington, D. C., whereas Fanatics Casino is available in four states.
Fanatics will be entering a competitive market alongside prominent brands such as Hard Rock Bet and DAZN Bet, which have also established their presence in Ontario in the last half year.
Fanatics Prepares for Ontario
“I think this is just more confirmation that Ontario is a global leader in regulated online gaming,” a senior industry source told Casino.org. “There are a handful of large operators not yet in the Ontario marketplace, and it sounds like those operators plan to launch in the province.
“Ontario remains a very attractive market because it offers a robust regulatory framework and a commercially attractive environment with a reasonable tax rate. Every year iGaming Ontario sees record revenues, and I suspect this year will be no different.”
However, the introduction of Fanatics brings back discussions about the potential for market oversaturation in the province.
Ontario's Market Continues to Expand
Following four years of open and competitive operations—competing directly with the government-run Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) platform, Proline—private operators in Ontario amassed more than $4.2 billion in gross gaming revenue in the fourth year. This raises the question: what is the upper limit for Ontario?
The level of player adoption indicates there is still potential for further expansion. In May, iGaming Ontario and the AGCO published an Ipsos survey revealing that 91.1% of respondents engaged in online gambling now utilize regulated platforms—an increase of 7.4 percentage points from 83.7% the year prior.
Standing Out Gets Harder
“One could argue the market reached saturation some time ago, so new entrants are likely coming in with their eyes wide open,” said Amanda Brewer, Senior Vice President of Policy & Communications at the Canadian Gaming Association.
“Since everyone operates under the same rules and many offer similar games, success increasingly hinges on user experience, app design, customer service, and loyalty rewards,” Brewer explained. “If a new operator believes they have a secret sauce no one else has thought of, I wish them the best of luck!”
In an extremely competitive atmosphere, Brewer anticipates that any prospective operator will perform thorough due diligence—evaluating the categorization of rival brands, the total number of operators, and the distribution between sports-related and casino-centered offerings.
“I suppose Fanatics believes it can be a market disruptor, much like DAZN,” she added.
